Turn the other cheek?

DEAR NORAH:
Are we always supposed to turn the other cheek when someone is doing wrong to us, or is there a point we need to take action?
- Stumped fellow from Rowlett, Texas

DEAR STUMPED:
As Christians we should not think of retaliation as a first course of action. However, God isn’t saying in Luke 6:29 that we should let people abuse us. All that is meant by it comes from Matthew 5:44 Jesus taught, “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” Stand up for yourself and others if the situation demands it, but remember that your enemy is a neighbor who we need to love no matter the difficulty and treat them how we wish to be treated.
